In the first three chapters of The Great Gatsby, the main character Nick goes to 3 different parties. These parties were all held by different people and heavily differ from the others. The three parties I am talking about include Daisy's party in chapter 1, Myrtles party in chapter 2 and Gatsby's party in chapter 3.
Daisy’s party was the first party that Nick had gone to and had taken place at Tom and Daisy’s house at East Egg. Their house was described as looking like an old mansion. According to “The Great Gatsby” “a cheerful red-and-white Georgian Colonial mansion, overlooking the bay.” This shows the old, colorful, Georgian style of the house. The house represents how the houses of east egg are built off of old money unlike west egg. The guests at Daisy’s party include Daisy, Jordan, Tom and Nick. Daisy during this party had not seemed very interested in Nick at first when he first entered but eventually talks to Nick after dinner, wanting him to pursue Jordan in a romantic relationship. Jordan had seemed very bored during the party as she did not seem interested with any of her surroundings or Nick showing up. Tom had greeted Nick at their house and as soon as they were inside tried reading some ideas with a racist book which he believed in and Daisy mocked him.
Myrtle's party was the second party in the book and had taken place in Tom’s apartment in New York, which he keeps for his affairs with Myrtle. Tom had purchased this apartment for his affair because he can have an affair with Myrtle there and no one from the valley of ashes or East or West Egg would know about their affair. According to “The Great Gatsby” “The apartment was on the top floor--- a small living-room, a small dining-room, a small bedroom and a bath.” This is just describing the apartment where the party takes place. The characters at this party include Myrtle, Tom, Catherine, Nick and the Mckees. Myrtle during this party had gotten very loud and drunk during this party. Tom also had given Myrtle the dog that she had wanted. Later on in the party Myrtle repeatedly said Daisy’s name and Tom had ended up breaking her nose ending the party. Catherine was Myrtle's sister and had gossiped to Nick about Gatsby. Nick during this party had gotten drunk for the “second'' time in his life and had left right after Tom broke Myrtle's nose. The Mckees were Tom's neighbors in New York and had a very weird relationship.
Gatsby’s party was the third party that Nick had gone to in The Great Gatsby, which had taken place in Gatsby’s mansion. Gatsby’s mansion was an exact replica of a hotel in France and is in West Egg showing the “new money” beliefs that come from west egg. According to “The Great Gatsby” “it was a factual imitation of some Hôtel de Ville in Normandy,” This is showing how grand Gatsby's mansion is as well as how fancy and royal it looks. A lot of people had gone to Gatsby’s party and we had known very few such as Gatsby, Owl Eyes, Jordan and Nick. Gatsby was first introduced when Nick and Jordan had gone outside to watch the entertainment when a young man says that Nick looks familiar to him. This man was Gatsby and they had served in the same division during the war. Many people also had gossiped about Gatsby such as a guess that he was a German spy and had killed a man. Later that night Jordan had gotten invited to go see Gatsby and talk with him. Jordan says that he told her something very important and they had started to leave. Owl Eyes was a character in this chapter who was seen going around Gatsby’s library, surprised that all the books were real and had drunkenly drove his car into a ditch later that night.
Out of all three parties i think that i would like to have gone to Gatsby’s party because of the size of his mansion and the interesting rumors and stories that we have heard about Gatsby. This party also seemed like everyone was just having a good time and did not worry about it very much and simply partied. At the other two parties they both seemed very tense and awkward. At Daisy’s party I think Tom was being very weird and the tension between Daisy and Tom would have made it miserable. Myrtle's party had been very average and boring until the end when Tom had broken Myrtle's nose. This would have made this party very hard to go to as well as that does not sound like a good time.
