The Great Gatsby has a wide variety of strange characters, both male and female. Out of three of the main male characters and three of the main female characters, I will be talking about who I would kiss, marry or kill out of the three characters. For the male characters I would marry Jay Gatsby, kiss Mr. Wilson, and Kill Tom Buchannan.
First off, I would marry Gatsby because of the effort he puts into his relationship with Daisy. I believe he would do the same for me and put in a lot of effort, even if he comes off in a very strange and awkward way at first. I may have to overlook all of his shady relationships, however I think that I would live a happy life with all of his money. I think that I would try and live a happy life with him, and I think it would be better than the other two options. I would not marry Tom because he is a racist, abusive, and a hypocrite to both Daisy and Myrtle, and I would not want to be in a relationship with him at all. I would not marry Mr. Wilson because in Chapter 8 we learn that he's going crazy in the valley of ashes, and thinks that God will want him to take his revenge, which he later takes out on Gatsby and then himself.
Second, I would kiss Mr. Wilson. There is no doubt that what Mr.Wilson had gone crazy in the end of the book, but before the death of Myrtle he was a very calm guy that was not aware that his wife was cheating on him. He was also a hardworking mechanic who had done his best to try and get out of the valley of ashes. I like Mr. Wilson as a character but I would not marry him because of what he had done to Gatsby in Chapter 8. I would not kiss Gatsby, as I would much rather marry him than the other characters. I would also not kiss Tom as he is a horrible person, who ruins the hope that Gatsby had to get with Daisy.
Lastly, I would kill Tom. Tom is definitely the worst person in this entire book. For example in chapter 1, pg 12, Tom says “Civilization’s going to pieces,”...”Have you read ‘The Rise of the Coloured Empires’ by this man Goddard?” This is showing one instance where Tom was being Racist, which is one reason why I would kill Tom. one other reason is that he is at fault for Gatsby’s death as he had told Mr. Wilson that Gatsby was the one driving the car when Daisy had hit Myrtle. In my eyes i see the death of Gatsby to be because of Tom because he had pointed the bloodthirsty Mr. Wilson at Gatsby. Mr. Wilson had been somewhat justified in wanting revenge for his wife, but should not have gone to the depths that he did.
I would also like to talk about three of the female main characters and do the same thing for them. For these three characters I would marry Jordan, kiss Daisy and kill Myrtle.
The first character I will be discussing is Jordan, who I would marry. I would marry Jordan because she is the less problematic out of the three characters given. She is a little snobby when she was first introduced in chapter 1, but I think throughout the story we see her start to be a nicer person. For example at Gatsby's party she had remembered the women in the yellow dresses, which she had met a long time ago at one of Gatsby's parties. She is also non reliant on men throughout the book, which both Daisy and Myrtle were not. Jordan overall represents a woman with no restraints in this era, where Daisy represents the opposite. One major flaw that I had seen in Jordan however was after Gatsby’s death, she had moved on and found a different guy other than Nick.
The second character I will be discussing is Daisy, who I think is a lot more dependent than Jordan, so I would only kiss her. Throughout the story I also did not like Daisy very much, because of how she had carried herself and depended on guys for everything. She had not taken responsibility for anything that she had done. For example, she was the one who was responsible for Myrtle's death, but Gatsby had stood up and taken the blame. I feel like Gatsby had done a lot to capture Daisy’s attention and she had not acknowledged it very much, despite Gatsby's incredible effort he had put in. However, Daisy had not done anything bad and simply had just been herself, not pretending to be anyone else.
The last character I would like to mention is Myrtle Wilson. I was not a fan of Myrtle because of how she had tried to act like she was an upper class woman, when she was really not and just relying on Tom for his money. For that reason and many more, I would kill Myrtle Wilson. An example of her trying to be someone that she really wasn't was during chapter 2, pg 27 “Upstairs, in the solemn echoing drive she left four taxicabs drive away before she selected a new one, lavender-colored with gray upholstery,” This is showing how Myrtle believes that she should be treated as a special upper class, when in reality she lives in the valley of ashes with Mr. Wilson. I overall think that she was a fake person, which both Daisy and Jordan had been themselves for this book.
